Construction-Themed Cake and Cupcakes

A new client recently asked me to make a chocolate birthday cake and matching chocolate cupcakes with a construction theme for her four-year-old son, who especially loves cranes. I decided to make the crane out of fondant and included his name as if it were the equipment company's name. I also added a number 4 to the ball that is hanging from the crane. I thought it was a fun way to incorporate these details into the design. In keeping with the theme, the rest of the cake is decorated with blue fondant and white clouds to represent the outdoors. I added gray fondant bricks, an orange fondant safety cone, and various fondant road signs to round things out. The blue buttercream-frosted cupcakes each have a fondant road sign to keep with the theme.
